Grass Valley™ announced today that its "ADVCmini" hardware and software conversion product for the Mac platform is now shipping. The ADVCmini video converter allows consumers and prosumers to easily and reliably transfer high-quality video images from VHS tapes, digital camcorders, and similar sources to their Mac computer for editing in Final Cut Pro or iMovie.
High-quality video can be captured via composite, S-Video, or SCART cable (available for European users only), along with stereo audio. PerfectPicture technology guarantees excellent quality conversion from composite video sources. The intuitive unit is small, portable, and powered by the Mac's USB port. The included software provides a video capture tool and compresses the video as it converts. All required cables are provided: USB, composite video/audio, S-Video, and (in Europe) SCART. An installation guide is also included.

abbey road control room Abbey Road Studios, one of the world's longest-established and most highly respected recording companies, has taken delivery of four NTP DAD AX24 eight-channel ultra-high-quality analogue-to-digital/digital-to-analogue audio signal converters. All four will be deployed during recording sessions as microphone preamplifiers and analogue-to-MADI interfaces. They will be operated in conjunction with Abbey Road's Pyramix digital audio workstations. Two of the units are additionally fitted with the IO192-PHD interface card allowing them to work with Avid Protools.

Golf Channel Simplifies PAL SIGNALCONVERSION with FOR-A FRC-7000

Golf Channel recently acquired two FOR-A FRC-7000 HD Frame Rate Converters for its facility in Orlando, Fla. The two units will be used to convert all of its PAL production feeds from Europe and Asia.
“Previously, our frame rate conversion was done by a third party. We decided to streamline the process and perform in-house frame rate conversion of PAL signals,” said Ken Botelho, Golf Channel senior director of engineering. “Now that we control the quality of that signal in-house, it saves time – and that saves money.”
Golf Channel is an international programming network serving more than 120 million homes with four different discreet output paths: SD and HD domestically, SD to Asia and the Pacific Rim, and a world feed that’s coming soon.
Not only does the FRC-7000 improve Golf Channel’s picture quality, it is the standards converter needed to receive the PAL signal from Europe directly via satellite. “The two units have definitely exceeded our expectations in terms of the integrity of our signal,” said Botelho. The two FRC-7000 units serve as the “traffic cop” for signals entering its facility from Europe. They interface with the master control and then converted footage can be routed to the server or record decks.
“We find the FRC-7000 is very easy to operate and control,” said Botelho. “Our operators appreciate that the unit has plenty of ‘handles’ on it. The ability to manipulate the audio and video is a very handy feature when you’re taking in satellite feeds. Once we configured it for our system, the FRC-7000 has pretty much been a ‘set it and forget it’ part of our workflow.”

ABC and Fox affiliate WGGB-TV selects Crystal Vision for HD upgrade

Massachusetts-based ABC and Fox affiliate WGGB-TV has selected Crystal Vision for its transition to HD, with the supplier decision made on the products functionality per dollar. WGGB-TV purchased 32 boards to up convert, down convert, distribute, synchronise, delay and embed/de-embed signals, and to key logos on to on-air programming.
WGGB-TV has been broadcasting from Springfield in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts since 1953. Locally owned by Gormally Broadcasting, WGGB-TV is an affiliate for two of The Big Four US television networks: ABC and Fox. WGGB-TV broadcasts ABC programming (branded as ABC40) in High Definition and has been broadcasting Fox (known as Fox6) since 2008. WGGB-TV has its own studios in Springfield for local programming and needed to find an interface supplier for the HD upgrade of these studios, with the decision to be based on the products scalability, price and functionality.
WGGB-TV evaluated four interface suppliers, including its current provider. Following the detailed evaluation, WGGB-TV chose Crystal Vision because of the amount of functionality per dollar. WGGB-TV liked the fact that they could adjust the design based on the budget, with the system design actually changing after WGGB-TV engineers saw the features of the Crystal Vision boards.
